Medical administration

Medical administration is administration or management utilising the medical and clinical knowledge, skill and judgement of a registered medical practitioner, and capable of affecting the health and safety of the public or any person. This may include administering or managing a hospital or other health service, developing health operational policy, or planning or purchasing health services. Medical administration does not involve diagnosing or treating patients.

Vocational training in medical administration is undertaken through the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (RACMA). Once RACMA training is completed the doctor is awarded the Fellowship of the RACMA (FRACMA).

Am I able to apply to work as a recognised specialist in New Zealand?

To apply for vocational registration in medical administration, you would need to hold:

  • the FRACMA qualification; or
  • an international postgraduate medical qualification in medical administration, where your combination of qualifications, training and experience will then be assessed against the standard of the FRACMA.

What standard would I be compared against?

For details on the training programme please refer to the RACMA website Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators.
