Oral & maxillofacial surgery
Oral and maxillofacial surgery involves the diagnosis and treatment (operative and non-operative) of patients with diseases, injuries and defects of the mouth, jaws and associated structures. This includes oral and maxillofacial pathology, trauma, dentoalveolar surgery, orthognathic and relevant reconstructive surgery, and facial pain.
Vocational training in oral and maxillofacial surgery is undertaken through the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (RACDS). Once RACDS training is completed, the doctor is awarded the Fellowship of the RACDS (FRACDS).
Am I able to apply to work as a recognised specialist in New Zealand?
To apply for vocational registration in oral and maxillofacial surgery, you would need to hold:
- the FRACDS qualification; or
- an international postgraduate medical qualification in oral and maxillofacial surgery, where your combination of qualifications, training and experience is assessed against the standard of the FRACDS.
